HELL NIGHT (1981) ****

  • Jul. 17th, 2007 at 3:28 PM
This slasher is a lot better than other similar features made around the same time because it actually manages to be atmospheric and scary. It also happens to be Linda Blair’s best non-Exorcist movie. She and a bunch of college pledges (including Vincent Van Patten) have to spend the night in an abandoned mansion where some gruesome murders took place. The killer Andrew, a “Gork”, is a retarded, scary, misshapen hulk who kills with a sickle and in one amazing scene rips off someone’s head. In the intense finale (which later was copied by Scream) another killer emerges from the shadows as well. Director Tom DeSimone did The Concrete Jungle next.
