THE GUY FROM HARLEM (1977) *

In this talk filled blaxploitation movie, a black private dick (Loye Hawkins) must pretend to be the husband of a diplomat’s sexy wife to protect her from some kidnappers. One scene in which a transvestite hitman is revealed to be a woman must have inspired Austin Powers. Most of the action takes place in a hotel room, so that means there is no action. Hawkins is a pretty weak hero, but his catchphrase, “Nobody fools with the guy from Harlem!” is kinda funny. The theme song is catchy too, but can’t save this slow moving actionless bore.
