HEAD (1968) *

They called it Head but it shoulda been called Huh? The Monkees (Peter Tork, Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz and Michael Nesmith) star in their first and (thankfully) only movie. If you liked their TV show you’ll probably hate it. If you hated their TV show you’ll probably hate it. It doesn’t make a lick of sense. It’s only worth mentioning because it was written by Jack Nicholson (!) and directed by Bob (Five Easy Pieces) Rafelson. Whatever talent The Monkees showed on television is easily zapped away by mind numbingly awful skits, lame psychedelic sequences, stupid dream scenes and inconsequential guest stars including Annette Funicello, Sonny Liston and Victor Mature. I mean seriously how many lost in a desert scenes can one movie take? They also sing a handful of forgettable songs if you care. At least we get to see Tor Johnson and Frank Zappa for like a second each and there’s a Bela Lugosi clip from The Black Cat. Nicholson and Rafelson have cameos and if you blink you’ll miss Dennis Hopper. Incidentally it was only called Head so if there was a sequel the ads could say, “From the people who gave you Head!”
