CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (2011) *** ½

Wow. Okay. So get this. My wife gets Crazy, Stupid, Love off Netflix. She knows that in my weakened condition my patience level is in the toilet. And she STILL insists we watch a Chick Flick.

For whatever reason I cave in and say “fine”. Turns out that this movie is not only extremely well-acted (by Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, and Ryan Gosling), smartly written, and sharply observed, but it's also very fucking funny as well. Color me shocked.

At dinner, Moore tells her husband Carell that she’s slept with Kevin Bacon and she wants a divorce. He does not take the news well. (He later jumps out of a moving car.) Carell starts hanging out in bars and generally making an ass of himself. One night a suave ladies’ man (Gosling) takes pity on him and offers to give him a few pointers on how to dress, talk to women, and more or less regain his confidence.

I won’t spoil anything that happens from there. The way the movie kinda weaves its plotlines and characters together is part of the fun. Not only that, but there’s also a couple of genuinely surprising plot twists along the way. I can’t even say that about some of the thrillers I’ve watched in the past couple of months.

In short, Crazy, Stupid, Love belongs in the upper echelon of Chick Flicks. I’m not saying it’s Say Anything, but it comes pretty close. I can’t quite give it Four Stars because that would mean I am a complete pushover for stuff like this. But considering the genre, it’s quite miraculous that it wound up being this damned good.

AKA: Love Again.

Saying I WOULD watch something and I WANT to watch something are two different things. : )

This film wasn't too bad, I don't mind a romantic comedy every one in awhile, if your wife wants you to watch another one, then i'd recommend you suggest "Friends With Benefits" as that's one film I tihnk you'd enjoy.

Having been forced to sit through Valentine's Day and He's Just Not That Into You recently I appreciate the heads up on this.

Yeah, I think you'll really enjoy it. Great acting and a solid script. Plus, some actual belly laughs. You can't go wrong with that.
