Joel Silver produced this remake of the 1959 William Castle classic. Geoffrey Rush is perfect in the Vincent Price role as an eccentric millionaire who invites five strangers to an abandoned, supposedly haunted mental institution. If anyone can spend the night without dying, they get a million bucks. Of course, the place is really haunted and the guests start dropping like flies. The standout scenes include the lunatics running the asylum opening, a videotaped operation and a look inside a depravation tank. The cast including Famke Janssen, Ali Larter, Taye Diggs, Jeffery Combs and Peter Gallagher are great, but Chris Kattan steals the show as the neurotic caretaker. It’s all entertaining, but the cheap looking CGI “Darkness” monster is hokey and lame. Silver also produced an updated version of Castle’s 13 Ghosts.
