THE INVISIBLE GHOST (1941) ***

In this fun horror cheapie from Monogram Pictures, Bela Lugosi plays Mr. Kessler, a grief stricken widower who still pretends to eat dinner with his imaginary dead wife. When it is revealed that she actually IS alive, Bela flips out and kills people whenever he sees her. After Bela’s daughter’s fiancé (John McGuire) is blamed for the murders and is executed, his twin brother (also McGuire) arrives on the scene to find the real killer. When he shows up, the black servant thinks he’s a ghost and asks, “Do I look pale? I feel pale!” Lugosi’s understated and sympathetic performance is among his best. Directed by B-Movie vet Joseph H. (The Big Combo) Lewis.
