Good, old fashioned film noir about a private eye (Val Kilmer) hired by a mysterious woman (his then real life wife, Joanne Whalley-Kilmer) to fake her death so she can escape her psycho husband (a typically intense Michael Madsen). Since she looks like Kilmer’s dead ex wife, he decides to help her out and gets in over his head. This leads to deception, double crosses and murder. All three leads are good, and so is the sturdy script, even though it’s filled with your basic private eye clichés. Director John Dahl also did Red Rock West and Rounders. The Kilmers both were in Willow the previous year.
