REVOLVER (1975) **

Oliver Reed stars as an ex-cop who is now warden of an Italian prison. Reed's wife is kidnapped, and the men who took her say they’ll kill her if he doesn’t help Fabio Testi escape from his jail. Without any other options, Reed agrees. Reed quickly realizes that Testi has no clue who his mysterious benefactor is, and together, they comb the city trying to rescue his wife.

Revolver is a solid thriller with an intriguing premise. After the rather tense set-up though, boredom slowly creeps into the proceedings. Once Reed and Testi team up, the movie spins its wheels way too much, and the conspiracy behind the kidnapping is as muddled as it is unlikely. The ending contains one nice twist, but the last hour or so of the flick is kind of a slog.

The good news is, the film is pretty violent and there’s a fair amount of skin on display. Reed gives a strong performance too, and he gets a couple of opportunities to chew the scenery. Plus, just hearing Reed’s familiar voice dubbed by someone else makes it good for a laugh. Too bad he and Testi never have any genuine chemistry together. We do get a great Ennio Morricone score though.

AKA: Blood in the Streets. AKA: In the Name of Love.
