With a premise like this you can’t lose: Jared Hess the director of Napoleon Dynamite directs Jack Black as a south of the border priest who moonlights as a Mexican wrestler to win money for his church’s orphanage. While it’s nowhere near as funny as Napoleon, it’s still pretty amusing and has some big laughs. Black is actually quite restrained and only occasionally succumbs to becoming his Blackness (usually whenever he has to sing). The wrestling scenes are all fun and some of his opponents like “Satan’s Cavemen” (two pygmy savages) and “El Snowflake” (a tall skinny black guy) get some of the movies biggest laughs. While a lot of the jokes don’t hit the mark, it’s still entertaining and certainly won’t disappoint fans of Black.
