A man (Choi Min-Sik) is wrongly imprisoned in an airtight apartment for 15 years only to be mysteriously let out to find the man responsible. He uses a hammer to pry the truth (and the tooth) out of one of the co-conspirators and in one of the film’s best scenes uses it to take on an unending army of thugs. Director Chan-Wook (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) Park’s visceral revenge tale benefits from a great performance by Min-Sik and a handful of torture scenes, if you can get past the deliberate pacing and some of the improbable plot twists that is. The final twist does pack quite a wallop however and if you’re looking for a movie in which a guy eats a live octopus raw, then look no further. Park did the horror anthology 3 Extremes next.
