It won a bunch of Oscars, made Anthony Hopkins a household name, had many imitators and people went out of their way to call it “The Psycho of the 90’s”. While it has some good performances, tight direction and is better than Manhunter (based on Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon, featuring Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter), it’s vastly overrated and is NOT a horror film. I still like it a lot though. As everyone knows Jodie Foster is FBI agent Clarice Starling who’s tracking a transvestite serial killer named Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) who kidnaps fat girls, puts them in a well and makes dresses out of their skin. He also sticks death head moths down their throat. Starling contacts imprisoned serial killer Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter (Hopkins) to help track the killer down. The best scene is where Lecter wears a cop’s face to escape. Look fast for cameos by Roger Corman (who gave director Johnathan Demme his big break with Caged Heat), Chris Isaac and George Romero. Also starring Scott Glenn, Diane Baker and Kasi Lemmons. Hopkins reprised his role in Hannibal and the prequel Red Dragon.
