SIN CITY (2005) ****

Frank Miller’s classic hardcore crime graphic novels have been lovingly recreated by directors Robert (From Dusk Till Dawn) Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and even Miller himself. The film’s classy black and white photography (along with splashes of color) and exact duplications of the original comic panels are great eye candy, but it’s the dynamite performances that hold the three stories together.

In the first story The Hard Goodbye, Mickey Rourke totally rules as Marv, and ugly possibly psychotic hulk who avenges the death of a prostitute (Jaime King) he only knew for one night. In the next story The Big Fat Kill, Clive Owen leads the scramble to collect Benicio del Toro’s head (literally) to save a town full of hookers from the Mob. In the final story That Yellow Bastard, Bruce Willis is an aging detective trying to save Jessica Alba from a disgusting, yellow pedophile (Nick Stahl).

Tough, violent and mean, this hard as nails crime movie will satisfy any comic book fan, film noir buff, or movie lover. The amazing supporting cast includes Elijah Wood, Rutger Hauer, Rosario Dawson, Alexis Bleidel, Michael Clarke Duncan, Brittany Murphy, Powers Boothe, Josh Hartnett and Marley Shelton. Rodriguez had to resign from the Director’s Guild in order to bring Miller aboard. “Special Guest Director” Tarantino directed the Argento-esque scene of Owen and del Toro in the car. Miller, a legend in the comics field also wrote Robocop 2 and 3.
