STAR WARS: EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983) ****

The final installment of the Star Wars franchise has Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) returning home to Tatooine to rescue his buddy Han Solo from the slimy Jabba the Hutt before joining up with some pint sized warrior teddy bears called the Ewoks to take down the Empire once and for all. He also confronts his father, Darth Vader (David Prowse, with voice by James Earl Jones) for the final time and does battle with the sinister Emperor (Ian McDiarmid).

The opening escape from Jabba’s palace including a run in with the monstrous Rancor and the hungry Sarlaac Pit is some of the best and most exciting action to be found in a Star Wars film, however those pesky Ewoks smack of George Lucas’ knack for merchandising. (Though in hindsight, they’re far less annoying than say, Jar Jar.) The speeder bike chase is also an eye popping and exhilarating sequence as well. The predictable but moving climax brings the story to a close, but it would take Lucas 16 years to bring the saga full circle with the prequel trilogy.
