STING OF DEATH (1966) ** ½

This film is just like every other teeny bopper monster movie from the 50’s and 60’s, but since it has the most retarded looking monster in film history, it’s highly recommended. The half man-half jellyfish costume is a guy in a wet suit, flippers and a garbage bag on his head. Brilliant. Egon, a disfigured assistant for a marine biologist, figures out a way to turn himself into said monster. After being pushed around by some drunk teens who like to say “groovy” a lot, he changes into the monster. A girl who swims fully clothed is the first victim. Egon sabotages the teens’ boat and it sinks in the middle of a swarm of jellyfish (that look like neon colored colostomy bags) that sting and kill them. He has the hots for the biologist’s daughter and takes her back to his underwater lair (just like in Creature From the Black Lagoon) and her boyfriend saves the day. The sight of a grown man in scuba gear with a plastic bag on his head isn’t easily forgotten. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie is. The theme song “The Jellyfish Song” by Neil Sedaka bumps up the cheese factor. (“Well-a I say-a fella forget your Cinderella and do the jella-jella jellyfish!”) Amazing. Director William Grefe did The Wild Rebels next. The ads promoted: “Slimy Underwater Horror!”
