Good performances can’t save this turgid and slow “epic” VERY loosely based on Homer’s The Odyssey. When wimpy ass Orlando Bloom bangs Helen of Troy he starts an all out war between Greece and Sparta. Brad Pitt is good as Achilles as are Eric Bana, Peter O’Toole and Brian Cox. The problem is that all the characters are given way too much screen time and “pathos” so basically there’s no “good” or “bad” guy, giving the audience no one to root for. Also all the battle scenes use obvious CGI soldiers, giving them no dramatic weight or dimension. And the damn Trojan Horse (which is the coolest part of the damn story) only shows up for about 5 damn minutes! Director Wolfgang Peterson also did The Neverending Story. If you wanna see Pitt in a toga for almost three hours, this is your movie, all others, beware.
