Wicker Park is a movie that is purposely confusing in order to make what’s happening on screen as interesting as possible since the audience doesn’t know what the heck is going on. If the film was told chronologically (Boy gets Girl. Boy loses Girl to big misunderstanding. Roommate tries to hook up with Boy. Boy reconciles with Girl.) it would have still been flat and boring. Director Paul (Ganster No. 1) McGuigan and writer Brandon (Apt Pupil) Boyce get so pent up with overlapping timelines and meaningless flashbacks that only make the narrative needlessly jumbled that they lose focus on the actual inherent drama. It doesn’t help either that all the leads (especially Josh Harnett who looks like Keanu Reeves if he was beaten profusely with a fish) are bland. McGuigan and Hartnett later teamed up with Lucky Number Slevin.
