This horror import from Australia will probably remind you of another foreign horror movie that was released this year, High Tension. They both feature ragged cinematography and disgusting killers, but are short on scares. Wolf Creek unfortunately lacks the gore of High Tension, but at least it doesn’t have that movie’s awful ending. The plot is simple: three hikers out in the middle of nowhere in the Australian outback are kidnapped and terrorized by a crazy bushman. Besides a pretty cool scene where a chick gets her fingers cut off, this flick has very little going for it. It also features a record number of scenes in which characters try to start a car without the key. It didn’t do a whole lot for me, but it does have a long list of admirers (including Quentin Tarantino). All in all it’s about as scary as an Outback Steakhouse commercial. John Jarratt stars as the killer. Supposedly based on a true story.
