BLOWN AWAY (1994) ** ½

There were a lot of mad bomber movies out in the early to mid 90’s.  Besides Blown Away there was Lethal Weapon 3, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Speed, and The Specialist.  Blown Away isn’t the first, last, best or worst of these movies, just the most formulaic.  Jeff Bridges is the head of the bomb disposal unit in Boston.  An Irish terrorist (Tommy Lee Jones) is blowing up all of Bridges’ friends because the former Irish militant Bridges wussed out on blowing up innocent civilians several years ago.  Since they were both in the Irish terrorist gang, Bridges knows all of Jones’ patterns and methods.  “He can make bombs out of Bisquick!”  The film has the usual “Cut the blue wire!” Diffuse-The-Bomb-Scenes, the best of which when a bomb is implanted in Forrest Whittaker’s headphones.  The ending is a lot like Speed where if a Jeep hits its brakes, it will blow up.  Director Stephen (Predator 2) Hopkins keeps things moving, but Bridges’ and Jones’ Boston and Irish accents grate on the nerves.  Also with Lloyd Bridges, Suzy Amis and Cuba Gooding Jr. in a bit part.  Don’t confuse this with the Corey Feldman/Corey Haim erotic thriller with the same title.
