Before Jonathan Demme won an Oscar for Silence of the Lambs, he cut his teeth working for Roger Corman. This was his first movie and it’s a tough as nails women in prison picture that features a great sexy cast. Erica (Vixen) Gavin gets sent to a hellhole prison run by a crippled Barbara (Black Sunday) Steele (who has a great Cabaret inspired fantasy scene). She later busts out with some help from her fellow inmates, and then has to break back IN to expose the pervert doctor who runs the shady clinic where he rapes inmates and gives them shock treatment. It all ends with a slow motion shoot out. It’s more serious and less exploitative than the usual Corman fare but it’s very slick and entertaining action film nonetheless. Featuring Cheryl “Rainbeux” Smith, Juanita Brown and Roberta Collins as prisoners and music by The Velvet Underground’s John Cale.
