The first Gingerdead Man was a funny if uneven variation on the Christmas horror classic Jack Frost; except instead of a killer snowman, it was all about a homicidal gingerbread man cookie. (With the voice of Gary Busey of all people!) This sequel drops the Christmas theme and is more like a low budget horror version of The Player as it takes place on a movie set and features cameos by several B Movie veterans.
Like the first movie, this flick has a brief running time that’s padded with tons of filler. There’s a recap of the first movie and an excellent opening credit sequence that features some awesome old school horror movie posters and fake Joan Jett music. The humor is a little bit more consistent than the first movie and features a pretty hilarious gag about a terminally ill kid from a Grant-A-Wish style foundation called “Over the Rainbow”.
Most of the kills are of the stab, then make a bad pun variety; but there is at least one memorably nutty death scene involving a gay guy getting a red hot curling iron shoved up his ass. Since the film takes place almost entirely on a horror movie set, the filmmakers saved a lot of money by just using a cheap existing set. (They also didn’t have to worry about paying Gary Busey this time out, so that saved them some more scratch.) There are also cameos from directors such as John Carl (Troll) Buechler, Adam (Hatchet) Green, and David (Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-A-Rama) De Couteau, but the only real “name” star is 80’s scream queen Michelle Bauer (who has aged gracefully enough).
Naturally, the killer cookie monster gets the best line of the film when he aptly ponders, “Who writes this shit?”
