HAROLD AND KUMAR ESCAPE FROM GUANTANAMO BAY (2008) **

Just when Pineapple Express started to renew my faith in stoner comedies, up comes Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay to completely bring the genre down a notch.

The plot has the two dopers Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) hopping a plane to Amsterdam so they can hook up with hot chicks and smoke a lot of reefer.  Mid-flight Kumar gets the brilliant idea to toke up in the airplane bathroom with a homemade bong that gets mistaken for a bomb and lands them in deep trouble with the Department of Homeland Security led by Rob Corddry.  The duo gets thrown in Guantanamo Bay prison where they are almost forced to eat a “cock sandwich”, but escape (DUH!  Didn’t you read the title?) only to wind up in another series of misadventures.

Early in the film, when Kumar boards the plane headed to Amsterdam he exclaims:  “It’s going to be like Eurotrip; only it won’t suck!”  Well, it’s true that this sequel to the 2004 cult classic, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle IS marginally better than Eurotrip; but that’s not saying Jack Shit.  I wasn’t a huge fan of the original Harold and Kumar, but it did have enough laughs to keep me mildly amused.  This outing, the laughs are few and far between and some of the increasingly bizarre situations the pair gets into just aren’t that funny.  (Like the run-in with an inbred Cyclops.)

Cho and Penn are decent at their second go-round at playing the title characters, but the supporting cast just isn’t given much to do.  Even the usually dependable Corddry doesn’t generate many laughs and seems like he’s trying way too hard with the obviously thin material.  Luckily for H & K fans, Neil Patrick Harris returns playing himself and easily outshines everyone else in the cast.  His mushroom fueled rampage through Beverly D’Angelo’s whorehouse is great and kinda makes you wish they would just go ahead and make a crazy ass Neil Patrick Harris solo movie already.
