DAWN OF THE DEAD (2004) ****

When I first heard they were remaking George Romero’s landmark zombie splatter movie, I got worried. I mean first of all, it’s rated R and the original was unrated and filled with juicy guts, blood and gore. Second, the zombies in this film are of the fast running, 28 Days Later variety, and not the traditional slow moving kind. (By the way, isn’t the term “fast zombie” an oxymoron?) I soon forgot my worries when the zombies attacked and they cranked the Johnny Cash over the opening credits.

The new film pretty much chucks Romero’s social commentary in favor of amped-up shoot ‘em in the head action scenes. The cast is all top notch. Ving Rhames and Sarah Polley were great, but it was Jake Webber as the Best Buy clerk turned zombie killer that takes the acting honors. And there’s also cameos by the original movie’s three leads as well as Tom Savani as a sheriff, so what more do you want? Throw in a zombie baby (although if you wanna see a REALLY disgusting zombie baby scene, check out Zombi 3), a zombie fatso, and a finale featuring armor plated shuttle buses equipped with chainsaws, you got yourself one hell of a kickass flick, no matter what it’s called. And make sure you stay through the end credits, too. Featuring Richard Cheese’s awesome rendition of Down with the Sickness.
